Where the FluSTAR Data Comes From

The core of the FluSTAR program relies on over 400 Physician spotter sites, including at least one in most local areas. Physicians perform a test for influenza on patients they suspect of having the disease. This test takes approximately 15 minutes to provide a result and is conducted using a qualitative, rapid assay for the detection of influenza antigen. All test results are tallied, analyzed and programmed into the FluSTAR system within days of test results to provide for accurate, real-time data on confirmation of influenza outbreaks. In addition to data on FluSTAR test results, participating physicians also provide important related data such as influenza vaccination rates.

Additionally, FluSTAR gathers data on diagnosis rates for influenza and influenza-like illnesses each week from thousands of physicians across the U.S. In addition to influenza, these physicians also provide a measurement of clinical diagnosis for other respiratory diseases.
